About

Background, and what I'm into outside of it.

I was never really interested in mining when I was younger, and I originally applied to civil engineering. All through my first school term I still planned on switching after first year. Then I went to PDAC during my first work term, and mining clicked for me almost straight away.

I'm ambitious about the technology side of it - building things, and getting my own ideas working in software, and hopefully hardware as I keep developing my skills. There are a lot of processes in mining that could be pushed much further technology-wise, and I want to be part of that, whether through my work terms or once I graduate.

I've always liked engineering and technology, but I wanted to work on things you can actually stand in front of, not just something on a screen. Geological engineering gives me both: real sites and real rock, with plenty of room to build software on top of it.

What I'm into outside of school and work

The Outdoors

I've been in Scouts since I was four, so being outside has always been a part of my life and a great getaway on a weekend after a long week of school. Canoe trips, camping and hiking are still awesome and I cherish them to this day. I now help out at Scouts.

Sports

Baseball is the sport I've stayed most committed to. I also love playing hockey and soccer, and I play intramurals at school - dodgeball, ultimate frisbee and hockey.

Finance

I love watching investments, mostly gold and silver, and testing out random strategies and algorithms. Most of what I put aside sits in long-term registered accounts.

Video Games & Friends

Most of my downtime goes to friends, either going out or playing online. The screenshot is a global rank of 1298 in Brawl Stars, from back when I actually took it seriously.

Technology

Whenever I get a coding class, or build a project, or make something with code, I genuinely enjoy it. The picture above is my first coding project, written in Java in grade 11. I've also learned MATLAB in class and picked up a bit of Python on my own. I like watching videos on how a piece of technology works, Starlink being a good example - fun fact, there are over 11,000 Starlink satellites orbiting Earth as we speak.

Picking Up Random Hobbies

Every so often I'll pick something up just to learn it and have fun with it, whether that's chess, a Rubik's cube, Sudoku or a couple of magic tricks. It's a good change of pace when I want something to do that isn't a screen.
